2006 Calendar Muslim Ramadan

The Hadj

The Hadj
The hadj, or sacred journey, is the pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims are enjoined to make once in their lifetimes. Its purpose is to detach human beings from their homelands and, by bringing them to Mecca, temporarily reinstate the equality of all people before God. One of the world's longest-lived religious rites, the hadj has continued without break for fourteen hundred years. It is, like most things Islamic, shrouded in mystery for Westerners. In his new book, Michael Wolfe, an American-born writer 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and recent Muslim convert, recounts his experiences on this journey, 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and in the process brings readers closer to the meaning of Islam. Wolfe's book bridges the high points of the Muslim calendar, beginning in April with the annual month-long fast of Ramadan. In Morocco, he settles into daily life with a merchant family in the ancient quarter of Marrakesh. During his three-month stay, he explores the intricate traditional life of Muslim Morocco. His accounts of this time deepen our feeling for Islam, a faith that claims one-sixth of the world's population. As summer approaches, he travels north to Tangier, where he visits Western writers 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and Moroccan mystics. In June, he arrives in Mecca, a city closed to all but Muslims. The protean experience of the hadj, 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and the real Mecca, that most religious 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and mysterious of cities, are captured in the last half of the book. Inevitably, the buildup to the Gulf War hovers in the background - the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait is just weeks away. Yet it is the author's participation in the age-old rites of the hadj that most preoccupies his thoughts, strengthening his bond to the faith he has embraced as an outsider, developing 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and transforming it, makingit personal 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and alive. Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (DVD)

Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (DVD)
IN THEATERS JANUARY 20, 2006 Courting controversy even before it was released, Albert Brooks?s LOOKING FOR COMEDY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD suffered a heady gestation period as the original distributor, Sony Pictures, balked at the title 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and refused to release it, leaving Warner Independent to pick up the reins. By using a mockumentary style Brooks weaves a potent satire on the shaky relations between America 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and the Muslim world. The film begins with Brooks being called upon by the U.S. government to travel to India 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and Pakistan in order to discover what makes a 300-million strong Muslim community laugh. On arrival Brooks hires an assistant, questions people in the street, 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and performs a hapless stand-up routine that only raises a few miserly chuckles. Floundering in an alien environment, Brooks's mission races towards its deadline with stress levels rising 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and precious little insight into the comic workings of the Muslim mind. Although the title is something of a misnomer (Brooks travels only to India 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and briefly to Pakistan) Brooks's movie is an interesting meditation on the machinations of comedy. Revealing the nuts 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and bolts of joke construction may not make a difference to the oblivious Muslim audiences who simply don?t get him, but for comedy fans this is a rare chance to see a comedian talking about his art in a semi-serious manner. Of course there are plenty of laughs as well, most notably when Al Jazeera tries to cast Brooks in a Muslim sitcom titled That Darn Jew (no prizes for guessing whom Brooks would play), 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and the film ends with a wickedly funny twist to the tale. A thoughtful film that manages to strike a sweet balance between comedy 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and sincerity, LOOKING FOR COMEDY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD is an unusual 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and brave piece of filmmaking, 2006 calendar muslim ramadan and deserves to be celebrated for those reasons alone.
